Chiesa di Maddalena - Maddalena

Restaurato nel 1626, per volere di Antonio Visconti, l’edificio fu fondato almeno un secolo prima, dall’antenato Antonio Visconti (ca. 1460-1527), e dedicato a Santa Maria Maddalena, forse in omaggio alla moglie Maddalena Trivulzio. Entro la loro cerchia si colloca l’anonimo autore delle figure di santi, Cristoforo e Antonio, e del fregio, a carattere profano e celebrativo, presenti all’interno (sec. 15°, primi decenni).
Fino agli inizi del 20° secolo fu oratorio, di patronato della famiglia Visconti di Modrone, a servizio dei residenti della Cassina Maddalena e poi della colonia legata agli stabilimenti insediatisi lungo il Ticino. Nel 1933, con la costruzione della nuova chiesa di Cristo Re e la creazione della parrocchia, è stato riconsacrato Santuario della Misericordia; risalgono a questa fase campiture e cartigli, recanti inni e invocazioni alla Vergine, di mano del pittore Pietro Rossini.

History and Description

Restored in 1626, at the behest of Antonio Visconti, the building was founded at least a century earlier, by his ancestor of the same name Antonio Visconti (ca. 1460-1527), and dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena, perhaps in homage to his wife Maddalena Trivulzio. Within their entourage is the anonymous author of the figures of saints, Christopher and Anthony, and of the frieze, of a profane and celebratory nature, present inside (15th century, first decades).
Until the beginning of the 20th century it was an oratory, under the patronage of the Visconti di Modrone family, at the service of the residents of Cassina Maddalena and then of the colony linked to the factories settled along the Ticino. In 1933, with the construction of the new church of Cristo Re and the creation of the parish, it was reconsecrated as the Sanctuary of Mercy; backgrounds and scrolls date back to this phase, bearing hymns and invocations to the Virgin, by the hand of the painter Pietro Rossini.
